Historic centre of Castel Goffredo
Type: Historic Places
Town: CASTEL GOFFREDO
The historic centre of Castel Goffredo is regarded by urbanism historians as the model of the “ideal city” of Sabbioneta (Mn), anticipating by about a century its typically Renaissance layout. Heart of the city is the noble and broad Piazza Mazzini in which are architecturally represented the powers of the city: Palazzo Gonzaga, now Acerbi, residence and court of the Marquises, the Provostal Church of St. Erasmus, the Town Hall, home of the “Magnificent Community” and finally the arcades under which are the shops of the commercial middle class.
The urban layout, formerly enclosed by moated fifteenth century walls with doors and corner towers, testifies the past of the city as a Renaissance capital city.
